The 2009 Prague Winter Festival is the 37th consecutive festival and each year the festival has gone from strength to strength. Prague opera and ballet is world famous, boasting some of the finest opera performances in some of the most stunning opera houses in Europe. The festival runs for five days from the 02 January to the 07 January and features many opportunities for you to enjoy opera, ballet and classical music performances in the Estates Theatre, The Prague State Opera, The National Theatre and the famous Dvorak Hall of the Prague Rudolfinum.

During the day, you can enjoy some fine performances by the Bambini di Praga, the famous Black Light Theatre of Prague, the Hradistan Dulcimer Band or opt to enjoy the city on one of our Prague excursions. Prague is a beautiful city, often called “The City of a Hundred Spires“. The city’s historical centre was designated a UNESCO World Cultural heritage site in 1992, emphasising the importance of Prague’s cultural sights. Prague’s city centre comprises four areas, spanning both banks of the Vltava River. On one side: the Old Town with the Old Town Square; the New Town with Wenceslas Square; and the Jewish Quarter. On the other side: the Lesser Quarter leads up to Prague Castle, where visitors can see the palatial rooms like the Vladislav Hall, St. Vitus Cathedral and St.George’s Basilica. An epic history has made Prague one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

NEW AND IMPROVED FOR 2009
Many of those attending the Festival in January 2008 helped us greatly by completing a form telling us their opinion of the Festival-- the good points and the not-so-good! We are happy to tell you that the great majority, over 88%, rated the Festival as “Very Enjoyable” or “Extremely Enjoyable”. The overall balance of the Festival Programme was praised as were individual performances; the many beautiful venues and the city of Prague itself were greatly admired.

We took the problems raised into account when preparing the Programme for 2009, a clear map showing the hotels, venues and places of interest is on the back page of this brochure along with a good indication of “normal” taxi prices. We have chosen only top seats at all performances so nobody will be seated “behind the pillar”!

We have introduced an extra for everybody in the form of a wonderful Opening Ceremony and get-together in the beautiful Municipal House on Saturday morning and a Closing Ceremony after the concert in the Rudolfinum on the Monday night. There is a wider choice of optional performances and together with a carefully chosen Programme of day and evening performances this will be, we hope, a “Very Enjoyable” or “Extremely Enjoyable” Festival for everyone!
